What do I do at Counseling & Psychological Services?

Hi, I'm Travis, and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor at CAPS. I have experience working with people of all ages (from children to senior citizens), but I particularly appreciate working with students at this pivotal time of life.  Specifically, most of my counseling work has focused on treatment of trauma, anxiety, and depression.  I am trained in EMDR, which is a specialized treatment approach for trauma-related concerns.  Additionally, I provide assessment of ADHD for students referred by ODAS, and I hold an ADHD clinical services provider certification.  I have master's degrees in counseling and practical theology, which provide a good foundation for treating students here at Liberty.  Finally, I am passionate about research, and I am pursuing research opportunities as they become available at CAPS.

What’s it like to work with me?

I hope that students feel safe, accepted, respected, cared for, and cared about in my sessions.  I hope my sessions provide a place where students feel they can process freely.  I don't think of myself as an expert with all the answers, but rather someone here to facilitate your own exploration and processing, holding a light, as it were, toward helping you find answers.  I like to use some solution-focused and brief therapy techniques due to the limited duration of counseling here, which can help to discover some helpful and practical things to do toward therapy goals, but sometimes that is not appropriate.  Everyone comes to counseling with unique needs.  I want counseling to be as non-threatening and un-intimidating as possible, and I hope students feel at ease and safe to work on real concerns.

What do I do outside of Counseling & Psychological Services?

Outside of CAPS, I enjoy helping coach my son's baseball team, learning about how to use Python programming for research and machine learning, and playing guitar.  I like to be outside if it's not 110 degrees.  I have a wife and three children, so I spend a lot of time with my family.
