Mae Benson

Practicum/Internship Student

What do I do at CAPS?

Hi! My name is Mae Benson, and I am a practicum student here at CAPS. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, and I am currently pursuing my master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. I am originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and my own experiences navigating high school and college have shaped my passion for working with college-aged individuals. These stages of life were significant and, at times, challenging periods of my own development, which has given me a particular understanding and compassion for students navigating similar transitions. I am especially passionate about working with individuals experiencing anxiety, OCD, depression, and trauma. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where students feel heard, understood, and comfortable being their authentic selves as they navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with this stage of life.

What is it like to work with me?

Working with me will look like entering a safe, collaborative space where your experiences are met with empathy, curiosity, and respect. I believe in creating room for emotions to be explored rather than dismissed or avoided, while also helping clients develop practical ways to navigate what they are experiencing. I strive to meet each person where they are, listen without judgment, and work collaboratively toward goals that are meaningful to them.

What do I do outside of CAPS?

Outside of CAPS, I work as an Activities Assistant at Centra Behavioral Health Hospital, leading groups for individuals seeking inpatient treatment. I enjoy reading, running, pilates, painting, thrifting, and true crime. I also have two cats who (despite the cat lady accusations) are the best to come home to after working long days at the hospital.
