Resident in Counseling

What do I do at Counseling & Psychological Services?

I am a Licensed Resident in Counseling and Nationally Certified Counselor, providing individual counseling to students as I work towards becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. I received my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University in 2019. Since then, I have enjoyed working with clients struggling with a range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationships, family of origin, identity development, perfectionism, trauma, and sexual healing. Each semester I offer a Schema Therapy Process Group, in which we explore ingrained beliefs about the self that affect how we relate to others and form unhealthy patterns. Additionally, I am seeking training and supervision to become a Certified Schema Therapist through the International Society of Schema Therapy and a Certified EMDR Therapist.

What is it like to work with me?

My primary job as a clinician is to help my clients meet their individual goals of therapy as they work towards healing. This process often involves using techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion-focused Therapy, and Schema Therapy. In the early stages of therapy, clients may take assessments to identify schemas and core beliefs. During sessions, early adverse experiences are explored as I help my clients uncover the roots of their issues, articulate their needs, and learn how to get those needs met today in healthy ways. Some homework is generally assigned between sessions, when applicable. I am also able to provide EMDR and other experiential interventions, where appropriate.

What do I do outside of Counseling & Psychological Services?

Outside of CAPS, I also teach for the Psychology Department at Liberty University. I am currently teaching Multicultural Counseling, Introduction to Research, and Crisis Assessments and Interventions. When I’m not teaching or counseling, I love being out on the water—either taking my kayak on a nearby lake or tubing with friends down the James River. I enjoy hiking with my husband on the Blue Ridge Mountains and biking on the Blackwater Creek Trails. Occasionally, I try my hand at gardening and photography. We have two rambunctious cats, Minnehaha and Osaka.
