What do I do at CAPS?

Greetings! My name is Dr. James Honeycutt, and I provide individual, couples, and group therapy to students at Liberty University (LU). I began mental health work in 2004 while completing a master’s degree in clinical social work at the University of Tennessee and was licensed to practice independently by 2008. My educational background also includes a seminary doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Eastern University. As the Assistant Director for Training at CAPS, much of my job is overseeing the supervision of practicum and internship students placed with us while completing their graduate degrees.

What is it like to work with me?

Although my approach may vary somewhat depending on the student, I tend toward relational models of change where we work collaboratively toward agreed upon goals. One’s motivation for change and willingness to practice throughout the week what is discussed in therapy sessions contribute to the final results. Those dealing with the following difficulties would likely be a good fit for work with me: relationships (including couples counseling), anger management, anxiety, and religious/spiritual struggles.

What do I do outside of CAPS?

In addition to my work at CAPS, I enjoy teaching the occasional graduate course as an Adjunct Professor for the LU School of Behavioral Sciences.
